An effective race requires mutual trust. The athlete’s trust in the coach’s training plans, and a coach’s trust in the athlete’s willingness to bring those training plans to life each and every day. Tony trusted me, and I trusted him. In the end, it was a very successful day. I am a mucho happy coach this morning. (photo credit Kelly Kline). … See MoreSee Less

We had some racing to do today at TriCoach! All virtual. We turned Dee’s Rock Hall Sprint Tri into a sprint Du. Sandy’s San Diego Half Marathon became a local virtual half. Tony’s Rock Hall Oly Tri became a tri in Lewes (but as his race director, I swapped out the swim for a beach run). Everyone crushed it, and made me proud to be their coach!

Congratulations go to Betsy Tootell this morning, as she completed her virtual St. Anthony Oly Tri. We actually turned this into a duathlon – 1 mile run, 25 mile bike, 6.2 mile run. As with many virtual races right now, Betsy did her race inside, using Zwift as her cycling course. The elevation on the Zwift course made the ride much more challenging. Great job, Betsy. You adapted and, with a finish time of 3:41:17, you CRUSHED it! … See MoreSee Less

for running two virtual races this weekend! Dee trained for the Coastal 5k on Saturday, and the Coastal 9k on Sunday. When the race was cancelled due to COVED-19, Dee opted for the virtual format (wearing last year’s bib). Yesterday’s 5k was a warm up for today’s 10k, and her pace was faster for double the distance. Great job, Dee! (Photo credit: Christiane Neaves) … See MoreSee Less

Rocco Malin contacted me on March 15, 2019, and said he was looking for a triathlon coach. He signed up for Ironman Arizona, and needed some coaching help to get there. We met at a coffee shop, and Rocco told me about his background. He’d never done a triathlon, didn’t really swim, and didn’t have a bike. And, because of a “bunch” of recent surgeries, he hadn’t yet received medical clearance to run. In addition, he was working two jobs, working on his degree, and was involved in his Motorcycle Santa activities. Before we met, I couldn’t believe that 8 months was enough time to prepare him for a full course race. But after we met, I had no doubt that he’d crush it. Working with Rocco over the past 8 months is one of the highlights of my coaching career. I couldn’t be more proud to hear these words last night from Arizona: Rocco Malin, YOU ARE AN IRONMAN! He did indeed crush it. (a big shoutout to Matt Place for giving me first hand updates throughout the day). Now, a little rest, and it’s time for Motorcycle Santa to spread some holiday cheer. Bruce Clayton Rocco Malin … See MoreSee Less

So proud to have coached this man through his first Ironman, and to see him come through the finish line on Saturday at Ironman Maryland.
